Wesley R. Young

Poker Writer - Poker Columns from Wesley R. Young

Wesley R. Young Poker WriterWesley R. Young doesn’t remember when he learned to play poker, but he does remember playing poker in high school. Then he mostly played Acey-Deucey for $20 and $30 pots, with some occasional games of five card draw thrown in for variety. But he made more money playing Euchre in high school than he made playing poker.

Young also played poker in college at the University of Rio Grande. He stuck with Acey-Deucey. His strategy was simple: have a bigger bankroll than your opponent, and know how many cards fall between the two upcards as a percentage. He also found time to earn a BS in Mathematics and an MBA.

Wesley R. Young learned to play Texas holdem in 2001 after spending some time gambling on sports. He wanted to find a game where he could get a bigger advantage over his opponent. He learned to play Texas holdem by playing $2/$4 limit Texas holdem at the Gaming Club casino and by reading Cardplayer magazine articles.

It didn’t take Young long to try Party Poker and then PokerStars, but he chased signup bonuses at over twenty different online poker sites. He admits he wasn’t a good enough player to make a profit chasing bonuses, but he thinks he broke even. But he got a lot of experience playing poker.

Wesley R. Young has been writing nonfiction since 1999, but he didn’t start writing about poker until 2004. His first article was published in Money N’ Profit magazine.  He started writing about poker after trying to find some poker strategy advice online. So much crap-disguised-as-poker-advice was out there that he decided he could do better.

The books which have most influenced Wesley R. Young’s poker game are Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones and The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. He plays poker twice a year at the Argosy Casino and at least once a year in Vegas. He plays online at Full Tilt Poker.

Wesley R. Young is the author of Play Poker Like A Pro: The Rules of the Game. He enjoys no limit and fixed limit Texas holdem and fixed limit and pot limit Omaha 8. His next book, due in early 2008, covers the mathematics of Let it Ride poker.
